Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 3, 1950, and attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Air Station in Chicago. After graduation from boot camp, he was stationed at Alamitos Naval Air Station in Oakland, California. Don completed two nine-month tours in the Korean War aboard the USS Philippines and was discharged on July 15, 1953. Including active service in the Naval Reserves, Don served for six years. On Don's father's birthday, July 19, 1958, he married Lorraine A. Wais.
